Lady Barbara Thomas Judge is a business ambassador for the UK and a trained commercial lawyer with extensive international experience as a senior executive in the government, energy and financial sectors.
Lady Judge served as director of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority in 2002 and became its chairman in 2004. During this time, she led significant restructuring of the Authority at a time when the nuclear industry was undergoing significant change. Upon completion of two terms in 2010, she was named chairman emeritus. In the same year, Lady Judge was appointed chairman of the UK Pension Protection Fund and was awarded Commander of the British Empire in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to the nuclear and financial services industries.
Lady Judge previously served as commissioner of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. During her tenure, she founded the International Committee of Securities Regulators to begin coordination of global securities regulation. Thereafter, she was named executive director of Samuel Montagu & Co., a merchant banking firm in London that is now part of HSBC Bank. Lady Judge was the first female to ever be named director of a merchant bank in London. She was also deputy chairman of the UK Financial Reporting Council as well as a public member of the International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants.
Earlier in her career, Lady Judge was partner at a major U.S. law firm, where she specialized in corporate and financial transactions.
Lady Judge is a non-executive director of Statoil ASA (Norway), NV Bekaert SA (Belgium) and Magna International Inc. (Canada). She also served as chairman of the business advisory board at the UK National Nuclear Centre of Excellence, and serves as chairman of the Energy Institute of University College London and chairman of the international advisory board of SOAS and its London Middle East Institute.
The first female member of the Board of Overseers of the Wharton School of Management at the University of Pennsylvania, Lady Judge is currently a member of its executive board for Europe, Middle East and Africa. She is also a member of the UK Nuclear Development Forum and the UAE advisory board for the Development of Peaceful Nuclear Energy.
Lady Judge earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania and a Juris Doctor with honors from New York University Law School.
She holds dual citizenship in the UK and United States.
